“ My work is inspired by the beautiful contradictions that exist in nature -
fragility and strength, and how they
inform my life’s experiences”
Riti Malik is a Sydney (Australia) based ceramic artist working with porcelain. She reinvents traditional ceramic techniques through a contemporary lens, forming new visual and material languages within the medium.
She holds an Honours Degree in Bachelor of Arts from India. After relocating to Australia in 2015, a long held interest in ceramics got a chance to came to life, leading her to pursue formal training through the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts (Ceramics) at TAFE Hornsby. Having previously worked in the corporate sector as a graphic designer, this shift marked a deeply personal and creative turning point - a journey of joy, meaning and intensive engagement with an age-old material and art form.
Over the past decade, Riti’s commitment to her practice has deepened through her independent studio work at Statement of Ceramics – Open studio practice. She has also participated in various wood firings, gaining hands-on experience with different types of wood kilns under the expert guidance of senior artists.
Guided by a passion for tactile, explorative expression, Riti’s work embraces both the delicacy and unpredictability of porcelain. Her works explore the fine balance between connection and contradiction, often reflecting the rhythms of the natural world and the subtleties of human experience.
Her work has been exhibited in group shows across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Port Lincoln (SA), and features in both private and corporate collections. She was awarded Winner of the Little Things Art Prize (Ceramics Category) in 2021 and received the People’s Choice Award for the Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize the same year. In 2024, she was a finalist in the Gosford Art Prize.
A recent collaboration with a photographer led to two dual exhibitions exploring the textures and land formations around Lake Eyre in South Australia. She was also profiled in Art Edit magazine in 2022.
Riti continues to explore the possibilities of porcelain, refining her techniques and developing new ways to highlight its quiet strength, subtle beauty and refined presence.
